side by side

Chris put this photo together the other day, and it’s pretty impressive to see how well
the helmet is working. Almost there!

downward dog

This boy would rather walk. He is already pushing up to his feet. Hence his odd crawl. Look out, here he comes!

so this is crawling

At least this is what crawling looks like in our house right now. He’s been at it for a week, and I hesitated to call it crawling for that time since it doesn’t look like traditional crawling. But there is no doubt that he is moving around on his own.

Back to watching for little fingers in the dog food once again.

caid’s adventure continues

People often ask how Caiden is doing, and we are happy to report that he’s doing well. The front to back:side to side ratio started at 63%, and a normal head should be between 75 and 80. Currently he is at 74%, showing the helmet is doing its job.
Taking a 3D photo of Caiden’s new head shape

The plastic surgeon believes he will be finished wearing his helmet around his first birthday. The soft spot they created during surgery is still pretty wide, but it is slowly filling in. They will continue to monitor the space since it might not fill in until his third birthday. There is a 1 in 100 chance that it will not fill in, and in that case they will use a bone graft from the side of his head as a patch. Obviously we’re hoping it will not come to that, and the surgeon isn’t concerned at this point. He thinks we asked a lot of his little head to go from 63% to 74%, so the spot should fill in with more time.

The helmet has not been a big deal through this whole process. It requires a lot of appointments, but Caiden doesn’t seem to mind wearing it. I love the horns it creates, and how they change daily.

We are heading into summer, and I hope the HOT weather will arrive after he no longer wears the helmet. Or, much to my mom’s dismay, his first haircut might end up being a buzz cut.

Overall, Caid is doing awesome and his head is dramatically different than when this process started. In fact, he has worn a helmet longer than not at this point. It is such a part of him that he looks odd without it. Plus, it serves a dual purpose as a shock absorber when he bumps into things. Good for learning to crawl!
