goodbye to a friend

Dear Helmet,

You’ve been part of our lives since November 21, 2012. We chose to go with black, to match everything. We debated designing a wrap for you, but in the end Jessica was afraid of it clashing with outfits. And you looked tough on top of Caiden’s head – much like a hockey helmet. So it worked in our family.
You required a lot of appointments, to adjust and tighten. Not a huge deal, since we loved visiting Tony. You made Caiden’s head sweat during the heat, and every three hours you needed to be cleaned with alcohol swabs. But we took good care of you and you always looked clean.
As Caiden grew, you not only helped reshape his head but you helped protect it too. As he head-butted toys, walls, cribs and family members, you kept him from getting hurt. You showed this with pride with all the scratches and scrapes on your outside.
But after seven months, it’s time to say goodbye. Even though we had a lot of good times, we will not miss you. Especially with the heat of summer creeping in. We hope you enjoy resting on top of Caiden’s teddy bear – and I promise its head will not sweat.

Love,
Caiden & The Shatto Clan

P.S. To celebrate, Jessica broke the no-cake-until-first-birthday rule. And Caiden was really excited that she bent the rules.

watcha doing?

Younger brothers have such a hard time getting their older brothers to pay attention to them.

first medal

Cam finished his second session of learn to play hockey! It's been pretty cool watching him go from a timid skater with a walker who cried because Daddy wasn't out there with him to a walker-free, stick-holding, puck-shooting player. He even mastered getting up after falling down (pretty hard to do when your equipment is a bit oversized). We're very proud of this boy.

and here come the stairs

No stopping this kid.

he had hair?

Caiden went for his first haircut. I know that is surprising for most, but it was looking pretty messy underneath that helmet.

So off to Miss Kim, who was up for the challenge. And like any good mother, I distracted him with an iPhone so I could take some photos.
 Such a big boy!

We have a plastic surgeon appointment in a couple of weeks, and that might be the end of the helmet. If so, you’ll be seeing a lot more of this hair.
